Avoiding Wash Sales: A Smart Date Check for Your Stock Trading Spreadsheet

Avoiding Wash Sales: A Smart Date Check for Your Stock Trades Why You Should Watch the Wash-Sale Rule In stock trading, one of the most important tax considerations is the Wash-Sale Rule , enforced by the IRS. This rule disallows claiming a loss on a security if you repurchase the same or a "substantially identical" security within 30 days before or after the sale. For traders who "short their own shares" —meaning they sell stocks at a loss with the intention of repurchasing later—this rule can be a tax trap . If you don’t track your trades carefully, you might accidentally repurchase the same security too soon, voiding your ability to deduct the loss. To prevent this , I use a formula that checks whether the trade date is at least 30 days past the sale date before allowing a repurchase. If not, it returns "Hold" to prevent premature trading. note: I use a spreadsheet for trading stocks and dictates when to make a move Google Sheets Formula for Date Che...

Consider these 7 Beaten-Down Stocks: The Mean Reversion Thesis

Over the weekend, I've been analyzing my watchlist and have identified several stocks that, despite recent challenges, appear poised for a rebound. This selection aligns with my Mean Reversion Thesis, which suggests that stocks experiencing declines may revert towards their average price over time. However, it's essential to consider the Efficient Market Hypothesis, which posits that current stock prices reflect all available information, indicating that these companies' challenges are already factored into their valuations and are priced right. The later is obviously flawed to a large degree. I believe this statement, based upon price movements between quarterly reports. Which I feel is a truth opposing the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Below is a summary of each company, including their current stock price, recent performance, 30-day price change, and a brief overview: 1. Archer Daniels Midland Co. ( ADM ) Current Price: $48.19 Recent Change: +$1.65 (+3.55%) 30-Day Chang...

Walmart’s Q4 2025 Earnings: The Rollback Sale No One Wanted

If there were an award for "Most Unexpected Stock Market Plot Twist," Walmart ( WMT ) might just take home the trophy this quarter. The retail giant delivered strong Q4 FY25 results, yet its stock took a nosedive faster than a Black Friday shopper diving for the last discount TV. The culprit? Guidance. Walmart’s Q4: The Good, The Great, and The Market Panic On paper, Walmart had a quarter worth celebrating: Revenue climbed to $180.6 billion (+4.1% YoY). Operating income surged 8.3% to $7.9 billion. eCommerce flexed its muscles with a 16% growth rate. Adjusted EPS landed at $0.66 , slightly ahead of analyst expectations. Walmart U.S. comparable sales grew 4.6% , proving that people still love a good deal (or maybe just inflation-adjusted grocery shopping). Yet, the market reacted as if Walmart had announced it was replacing every store with a lemonade stand. The stock plunged 6.5% as investors zeroed in on one thing: the company's lukewarm guidance for FY26. Guidance:...

Discovering a New Preferred ETF: PFFV vs. PFF

I have been enjoying dividends from iShares Preferred and Income Securities ETF ( PFF ) for several years. PFF is like that reliable old friend who always shows up on time and never forgets your birthday. It provides exposure to a diverse set of fixed-rate preferred stocks and offers a trailing twelve-month yield of around 6.26% with an expense ratio of 0.46% . It’s not flashy, but it gets the job done, making it a long-time favorite for income investors like myself. Then, one day, during a conversation about Preferred Stocks as an alternative to traditional investments , a friend hit me with a new idea: Global X Variable Rate Preferred ETF ( PFFV ) . I was skeptical at first—like when someone tells you they found a better coffee shop than your usual—but then they mentioned a better monthly payout than PFF. Now, if there’s one thing that gets my attention, it’s higher monthly dividends . PFFV is the new kid on the block. It lacks the long history of PFF, but it offers a distinct ad...

Intel’s Future: Deal Speculation, Stock Movements, and Long-Term Potential

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) is back in the headlines, and this time, it’s because of potential deals involving Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM). A recent Wall Street Journal report suggests that Broadcom is interested in Intel’s design business, while TSMC is evaluating Intel’s fabrication operations. These rumors have sent Intel’s stock surging, gaining over 20% in February alone . Breaking Down the Deal Talk Broadcom is known for its aggressive acquisition strategy—cutting costs, raising prices, and optimizing business units to extract maximum value. Analysts like Stacy Rasgon from Bernstein believe Broadcom could manage Intel’s x86 CPU business more efficiently than Intel has in recent years. On the other hand, TSMC’s rumored interest in Intel’s fabrication business raises questions. Intel has been investing heavily in its foundry operations , aiming to become a major player in contract chip manufacturing. However, the foundry bus...
